Our work in Africa

For over four decades, SOS Children's Villages has provided loving homes for children in Africa without parental care.

Children attending Day Care at the SOS Social Centre Gulu UgandaOur Children's Villages are home to over 17,000 children. Many of them are orphans.

We also provide services for families in need through our community projects. These programmes help over 700,000 people living in African countries.

We cannot do this work without the help of supporters like you. If you would like to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable African children, use the links below to find out how you can become part of work.

  • Strengthening families: As well as caring for children without parental care, we support families at risk of break up so children can grow up in a healthy environment. • HIV/AIDS: Sub-Saharan Africa is home to 12% of the world's population, yet 69% of HIV patients live here. A key focus for us is prevention, treatment and support for children impacted by HIV. Find out more...
  • Malnutrition: Many African children face day-to-day hunger. Not only can this threaten lives, it can also affect a child's physical and mental development. We ensure that children in vulnerable communities get a healthy and adequate diet. Discover more...

Our Africa

To celebrate our 40th anniversary of working on the African continent, we created Our Africa. This is an online platform for young Africans to tell their own stories, in their own words, through short videos. Their videos offer a special insight into the rhythm of their daily lives. In 2012, the initiative won the One World Media Award for New Media.
